Brown Acres Organic Microgreens is a family-owned farm in Tai Tapu, Canterbury, run by Jess Brown and her 3 tamariki. After Jess’s brother “Brown” passed away from type 1 diabetes, and the children’s father having a bad accident in lockdown, deeming him unable to continue his career as a builder, we moved onto our lifestyle block and built 30sqm into a sustainable microgreens operation. Utilising vertical indoor farming, they grow a variety of nutrient-rich greens—including sunflower, radish, broccoli, and pea shoots—using 95% less water and six times less land than traditional farming methods. The spray-free, certified organic microgreens are harvested fresh and delivered to local restaurants across Christchurch and Selwyn, amd supermarkets across the South Island. With a focus on environmental resilience and community health, Brown Acres continues to expand its reach while staying true to its roots in sustainable, family-driven agriculture.
