In this Whāriki6 session, barrister and thought leader Kingi Snelgar (Ngāpuhi, Te Whakatōhea, Ngāi Tahu) will reflect on his experiences navigating the Kāwanatanga sphere while aspiring for tino rangatiratanga.
Drawing on lessons from his mahi in the justice system and his expertise in indigenous governance, Kingi will share insights to empower Māori businesses and leaders to grow with confidence, influence, and mana.
About Kingi
Kingi Snelgar is a barrister based in Tāmaki Makaurau with whakapapa to Ngāpuhi, Te Whakatōhea, and Ngāi Tahu. He holds a BA/LLB (Hons) from the University of Auckland and an LLM from Harvard Law School.
He specialises in criminal defence and has appeared in significant cases involving youth justice, Māori rights, and the application of tikanga in Aotearoa’s courts. Alongside his legal practice, Kingi is a thought leader on constitutional transformation, drawing on lessons from Matike Mai.
Outside of the law, he is developing a kaupapa Māori enterprise producing rongoā Māori and wairua-based consulting, centred on whakapapa, mauri, mana, tapu, and noa — with a vision to enhance collective wellbeing and support the journey toward tino rangatiratanga.
